He is Risen

“But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for He has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where He lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that He has risen from the dead.”

Matthew 28:5-7

The angel reminds the women that Jesus had been crucified. He had suffered a cruel, merciless death. Usually that would be the end of the story. Dead people stay dead. But not here. He proclaims to them that Jesus is not dead in the grave. He proclaims that Jesus has risen. That Jesus is alive!

Then the angel reminds them that this is exactly what Jesus said would happen. Before His death, Jesus made it clear that he was not a helpless victim. He was almighty God laying down his life, and then taking it back up to rescue those who couldn’t save themselves. Jesus was crucified to satisfy the holy and righteous wrath of God towards us. He conquered death and destroyed its power.

This is our great hope. Jesus lived the sinless life we could not live. Jesus died the death that we deserved to die. And now we can now share in the new life that He lives forever.

The story of Jesus’ resurrection shouts that Jesus is God. He had the authority to die for our sins. He had the authority to reach into death and pick up his life again for our salvation. And He has the authority to command us to go and make disciples.

Read Matthew 28 today. The angel proclaimed the death and resurrection of Jesus to the women and instructed them to go tell the others. And “with fear and great joy” they obeyed. At the end of chapter 28, Jesus commands that we do the same thing.

Write down the name of someone in your life who does not know Jesus. Pray for that person, and seek an opportunity to be bold with the gospel and tell them this great news!
