SWO Medical Info

In Case Of Emergency

  • Life-Threatening Emergency – In a life-threatening emergency, always dial 911 and alert a Snowbird staff member.
  • Non-Life-Threatening Medical Event – In the event of a non-life-threatening injury or illness, please call the SWO Medical Line at (828) 351-6971 to get in touch with a First Aid/CPR certified staff member. (A registered nurse is available for various summer camp weeks.) Our medical staff may not be available for late night calls. If non-emergent assistance is needed, call again at breakfast time the following day. This number is to be used for medical events only and is not active outside of scheduled events. Outside of scheduled events, please refer all questions/concerns to the SWO main office, 828-321-2210.
  • SWO Medical Station – The Medical Station is located in the Coop Lounge.

ATTENTION PARENTS/GUARDIANS: While at SWO, church/school group leaders are the primary persons responsible for student care, including management of injuries and medical conditions. Discuss student medical needs with church/school group leaders before arrival at SWO to ensure that group leaders are aware of pertinent care instructions, medication needs, emergency action steps, and any activity restrictions related to the student’s condition(s).

ATTENTION GROUP LEADERS: Church/school group leaders are strongly encouraged to bring a first aid kit to treat minor injuries/illnesses within their group. The SWO Medical Station can provide initial wound dressing and medication dosage, but continued wound care and medication dosage are the responsibility of church/school group leaders. Directions to two local pharmacies are listed below. Due to the nature of attending an outdoor camp, group leaders are also encouraged to monitor students’ food and water intake to ensure they feel their best while at SWO.

Medication Policy

Please read the following information concerning Snowbird Wilderness Outfitters’ policy on medication storage and administration.

  • The storage and administration of all non-refrigerated prescription and non-prescription medication is the responsibility of church/school group leaders, with secure storage via lockers provided in each cabin. It is the responsibility of parents/guardians to discuss medication needs and medical conditions with a student’s group leaders.
  • All prescription medication should be in its original, child-proof container with the original pharmacy label clearly legible. Also include:
    • Number of doses brought to SWO.
    • Instructions for administering, storing, and disposing the medication.
  • All over-the-counter medications should be labeled with the following:
    • Student’s first and last name.
    • Expiration date.
    • Number of doses brought to SWO.
    • Instructions for administering, storing, and disposing of the medication.
    • Name and contact information of the health care professional who recommended the medication, if applicable.
  • For medication requiring an injection, a trained administrator must be present within a student’s group (this may be the student themselves).
  • If you or your student has been prescribed an emergency medication, such as an epinephrine auto-injector, inhaler or other emergency medication, it MUST be brought to SWO and kept on the individual’s person at all times, regardless of frequency of use in the past. For off-campus water recreation, waterproof medical kits are available for storage.
  • SWO offers secure storage for refrigerated medication. Please contact riskmanagement@swoutfitters.com at a minimum of one week prior to arrival to receive the appropriate forms. Refrigerated medication must be brought to the SWO main office upon arrival. Participants are responsible for picking up their refrigerated medication when leaving SWO. The medication must be in its original container and appropriately labeled as stated above. *Please note that the role of SWO employees in handling refrigerated medication is only to store and retrieve the medication, not to administer.
