The Bronze Serpent

Rob Conti : John 3, Numbers 21 : April 6, 2018

In John 3, Jesus is portrayed as something that can be confusing — He is portrayed as a snake. John 3 refers back to the Old Testament book of Numbers. The people of Israel were complaining about their freedom from Egypt, so the Lord sent fiery serpents among them as a curse. Moses was instructed to set a bronze serpent on a rod and have the people who had been bitten by the snakes look to the bronze serpent so that they would not die.

Jesus is like the bronze serpent in that He took our sin from us; He became the curse and took on the wrath of God for us. Why? Because He loves us. We can experience salvation and freedom from God’s just wrath through Christ.
